OKAY incoming rambles

if you're curious, this is a little from page 71-72, plus a lot from p. 192 and onward

apparently not a lot of people know about singularities or how they work. adam comments (about N):

"He knew about the singularity. So, it was not just a theory, even the researchers in the military application division were aware of it as well. Even in the UK, where I was born, this must be a phenomenon only known to a handful of researchers."

also fun fact, while singularities are usually made by two opposing abilities, apparently on very rare occasions there are ability users who can become a singularity all on their own. like if your ability is to amplify abilities and you use that on yourself, you'll end up creating a loop, constantly amplifying your own ability more and more, and then the ability user dies and SINGULARITY TIME. those singularities destroy a whole fucking lot and then burn out, so fun times

now i'm just gonna paste in a bit:

"It's a dangerous ability -- -- destroying yourself, including everyone around you. But it only happens once. Such a thing can hardly be called a weapon," Professor N said with a stern expression on his face. "However, it is a fact that there's an energy -- almost infinite inside this ability user's body. Is there a possibility to somehow extract it as a controllable resource? That was the starting point of my research. Then... finally, a nation appeared which had implemented its usage as a weapon. One of the most advanced countries in the study of different abilities, France."

[...]

"Singularity as a weapon? How did you do that?"

"By using the mind"

"Huh?"

"The mind. The human's soul," Professor N said solemnly, almost as if he were reciting a poem. "Usually, an enormous source of energy would be operated by an apparatus such as a controlling device, right? But as I have mentioned earlier, the only living things who use an ability are humans. From a non-scientific point of view, only the human soul can utilize the energy of an ability.

Based on this. French researchers made use of personality formulas and replicated cultivated human bodies to deceive the ability into thinking that *there was a person and a soul*"

[...]

and verlaine taunting chuuya at an earlier point in the story:

"A military researcher attempted to artificially extract the ability solely from the ability user. Their attempt was successful. But only half. Naturally, this unusual power cannot be controlled by a machine. What can be controlled is only the human soul. But at the same time, this means that the output limit of the ability is defined by the human mind.

So, the researchers came up with the idea of deceiving thsi ability.

One side of the ability assumes that "there is a human here" and hence is willing to be controlled. For that purpose. a "personality formula" was created.

A soul disguising itself as human. It's a very simple string of emotional equations and behavioral principles just to deceive that side of the ability. The lengs of the string is 2,383 lines.

Do you understand, Chuuya?

Your soul is just a program of mere 2,383 lines that the researchers typed on a whim."

I figure Fyo probably knows the general theories behind this. He does know enough about singularities to create one, so he's definitely dug up every bit of research he can find, though a lot of the details have been lost.

only two singularity ability users have ever been successfully made. even N hints that he tried to recreate it and couldn't:

"You are a miracle, Chuuya-kun," N said as if he were reciting a poem. "In the end, I was unable to reproduce a phenomenon identical to you."

anyway, getting to what fyo DOESNT know:

"Artificial ability life forms were manufactured by implanting the cells of an original into a singularity life form -- -- In Chuuya's case it had been Arahabaki. Therefore, without being internally different from humans, they could not be differentiated by medical examinations. Even if top-ranked doctors and bio-engineers in Japan had examined him, they could have been unable to distinguish whether Chuuya was an artificial being built up on a man-made formula or not"

What he doesn't know is if Chuuya is a human whose personality was erased and overwritten with code, and then implanted with a singularity, or if he's fully artificial and made to resemble a human in order to fool the ability.

verlaine is assuming chuuya is fully artificial because he is, but he was made by completely different scientists. n just can't be trusted, and dazai points out he could be lying when he says chuuya is artificial.

we do find out at the end, so chuuya knows!!! he was once a real human boy who was stolen from his parents. he even knows who those people are, and chooses not to meet them, because the only family he needs is the mafia!!!

(also while stormbringer doesn't confirm this, pretty sure chuuya still doesn't think of himself as that same human boy they lost. after all, that boy's entire personality WAS erased and overwritten, which would be the same as dying)
