fatalism: (how am I gonna be an optimist about this)

arrives late with starbucks and this rat

[ the turn of a key, then an open door. someone switching on the hallway lights before discarding something by the entrance before stepping in.

dostoevsky appears a moment after, devoid of his usual white coat and ushanka he looks cartoonishly normal. as if part of his myth is also embued into his particular choice of clothing. everything he's wearing now is black and grey, plain and muted. easy to forget and easy to blend in. though that is a deception that would never fool anyone who knew what dostoevsky is capable of.

still, this whole thing is a surprise.

two things happen in quick, almost imperceptible succession. the first is the flicker of surprise, the slight widening of eyes as he sets them on dazai, the rope and then chuuya before turning back to dazai. the second is subtler, a twitch of the fingers, so easy to miss for anyone who is not dazai and a gesture that betrays fyodor so utterly and completely, he'll want to cut off his hand later. it's a telltale sign of the impulse to help dazai. it happened without thought or consent, an automatic reaction that has surely been implanted to him in his time as the ada's latest charity case. (or leashed dog, as it may be).

well, alright then. ]

Dazai, I was wondering why you were late. [ a lie. they had not made plans to meet, in fact, fyodor probably has no acceptable reason to be here but given that he'll lie.

it is easy. lying is like breathing and it gives him a moment to piece what he's looking at because...

he'd be lying if he denied feeling amusement at seeing dazai dangle like a puppet. ]
